The Story told by Contemporary News Reports

In the 1880’s and 90’s The “Big City” newspapers from Brandon and Winnipeg did pay attention to events on the “frontier”. Complete copies of many publications are now available online at: www.manitobia.ca

Other records will give us statistics, names and numbers; but it is through newspapers that we get a feel for the times.


1. Settlement News Stories

Long before the Town of Rivers was born, news from the communities in the R.M. of Daly such as Ancrum, Tarbolton, Wheatland and Roseville would occasionally appear in the Brandon Sun.


2. The Railway

The coming of the Grand Trunk Pacific was big news across the country and across the continent. Even the New York Times reported on G.T.P. plans and progress.

3, The Commonwealth Air Training Plan

Provincial and National Papers noted the creation and evolution of the Rivers Base.
